The PNG Hunters rugby league team have beaten the Northern Pride 26-18 in their historic first ever match in Cairns.
The home side led 18-14 with nine minutes remaining before PNG scored two late tries to ensure a debut performance to remember.
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill rang the team after the match to congratulate them on behalf of the government and country.
PNG Hunters CEO Brad Tassell praised the first up effort but says it was only a trial match and they aren't getting carried away.
The team's official Queensland Cup debut is against the Redcliffe Dolphins in three weeks time.
