Push for Chinese language to be taught in Fiji schools

5:11 pm on 10 February 2014

The Chinese Association of Fiji says it is hoping to introduce the Chinese language into the education system.

Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reports the President of the Association, Jenny Seeto, says she is communicating with the government to integrate Chinese language classes, because Chinese people have been in Fiji for at least two hundred years.

Ms Seeto says at one stage the students at Yat Sen College would sit the New South Wales Chinese Education Exams, which is at a very high level.

She says Mandarin is spoken right around the world, and it is good that children learn the language.
