Washed-up castaway recovering in Marshall Islands tells of storm and starvation

More details have emerged of the journey taken by a man from El Salvador who washed up on a remote Marshall Islands atoll last week.

Jose Salvador Albarengo is recovering in the capital Majuro after what he claims was a thirteen month sojourn at sea after being blown off course during a fishing trip off his home in southern Mexico in December 2012.

Our correspondent in the Marshall Islands, Giff Johnson, says the shrimp and shark fisherman set out on the trip with a teenage boy.

The young man was between fifteen and eighteen, went on this fishing trip with him and died about four weeks into their drift because he couldn't or wouldn't eat raw bird meat to stay alive. He said he starved to death.
