An Indonesian military officer has been shot dead in an ambush in Papua.

The Antara news agency says the incident took place in Mulia where the officer was heading toward the earlier shoot-out scene between members of the Indonesian military and armed separatists.

Earlier in the day a separatist was reportedly killed.

Papua has been the scene of a low-level rebellion since the former Dutch colony was taken over by Indonesia in the 1960.

Foreign media are banned from the area.
