Clerk in Solomons capital says teachers union has grudge

2:37 pm on 23 January 2014

The Honiara City Clerk says a threat by Solomon Islands teachers to boycott the start of the school year on Monday is based on a grudge against a former chief education officer.

Charles Kelly met members of union, SINTA, yesterday afternoon to discuss disagreements with some teachers postings for 2014 and teachers' unhappiness with Don Houkura.

SINTA claims Mr Houkura has been involved in a number of controversial issues and are threatening strike action if he continues working in the education sector.

But Mr Kelly says the media has been misinformed about Mr Houkura's employment and says he has been without a job since his contract expired in December but the council is aiming to hire him temporarily.

He says SINTA has not put its concerns in writing to the Council.

"They were not even also raised. They just do not like him. I assume it's just a personal issue because people at SINTA were sacked by Don Houkura his term in office as the CEO."

Charles Kelly says he would like to employ Don Houkura to carry out special duties for six months including training new staff.
