The police in New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea are investigating the killing of a police officer who was looking into a rape complaint.
The police say Bung Melung, a community auxiliary policeman was on duty providing security to the minister Ben Micah last Wednesday when members of Metekavil village informed him of a rape complaint involving a suspect who was tied up.
The police say Mr Melung was advised not to go, but he went ahead and picked up the suspect.
They say a group of people with the suspect allegedly attacked the officer from the back using a knife and slashed him repeatedly on his head before fleing into the bushes.
The police are now on the hunt for six suspects.
