PNG court to rule on legality of PM arrest warrant

4:28 pm on 9 January 2014

A decision on whether the arrest warrants issued for Papua New Guinea's prime minister and two senior ministers were legal will be handed down in court this afternoon.

On Tuesday, the court heard from Peter O'Neill's lawyers, and lawyers for the treasurer, Don Polye, and the finance minister, James Marape, claiming they were issued outside of the usual lawful process.

This morning the district court in the capital, Port Moresby, heard submissions from police.

Our correspondent, Todagia Kelola, says police admitted that procedures to obtain the warrants were not carried out properly.

"This morning the police prosecutor stated that they agree with what the prime minister lawyers have stated that the warrants are without any basis in law and that the forms are improper in law and do not stand, and they do not dispute the argument which were put forward by the prime minister's lawyer that there must be compliance of the law for warrants to stand and to be effected."
