Suicide attempt at Australia's PNG detention centre

7:13 pm on 8 January 2014

The Refugee Action Coalition says a 23 year-old Iranian asylum seeker in the Australian-run detention centre in Papua New Guinea attempted to commit suicide last weekend.

It says the man's life was saved by others in the camp and he has been taken out of the detention centre on Manus Island.

Both the UN refugee agency and Amnesty International have been critical of the conditions at Australia's camps, describing them as cruel and degrading.
