The Alliance of Independent Journalists in Papua says there was a significant increase in intimidation and violence against journalists in the Indonesian provinces in 2013, compared to the year before.
The Alliance says it recorded 20 cases of intimidation and violence in 2013, with 12 cases in 2012.
Of the 20 cases , four cases occurred in West Papua and 16 cases in Papua.
It says much of this violence is done directly through verbal and physical intimidation such as threats and insults, vandalism, entering the editorial office without permission, and beatings.
The Alliance of Independent Journalists says elements of the police force became the party that most frequently committed violence against journalists, besides community groups.
It says that though the relationship between the police and journalists in Papua tended to improve, there were eight recordings of violence and intimidation from the police in 2013, double that of the year before.
