The College of the Marshall Islands is set to launch its first maritime training programme in January, with the roll-out of a more comprehensive course later in 2014.
Mike Vredenberg, who has been developing curriculum for the programme, says initial classes will consist entirely of basic safety training.
The first intake will be mostly workers with the Majuro-based Luen Thai Fishing Venture, which operates a fleet of tuna longliners.
Mr Vredenberg says the aim is to get the maritime training programme accredited by the U.S. Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which accredits the college's other academic courses.
