A recaptured prison escapee in American Samoa is facing fresh charges.

Joe Togitogi has been charged with escaping from confinement and resisting arrest after walking out the unlocked gate of the Territorial Correctional Facility.

Togitogi was in jail pending trial on robbery and unlawful use of a weapon charges.

Samoa News reports he walked out on November the 26th and was arrested following a tip from a resident.

The newspaper says the issue of the unlocked gate has been raised by members of the public on numerous occasions in recent years.

Inmates escaping from the facility is one of the issues that led to the removal of the warden earlier this month.
