Papua New Guinea's acting police commissioner, Simon Kauba, has set up a high level investigation into the alleged rape of a 16 year old girl by Wewak-based policemen.

The investigation will also look into the recent alleged unlawful detention of a woman activist at the Wewak police station.

Acting Commissioner Kauba said these are very serious allegations and will be thoroughly investigated.

Senior officers from Port Moresby and Lae will be carrying out the investigation.

Mr Kauba says he will not hesitate to take appropriate action against his staff if the allegations are confirmed.
