The Papua New Guinea National Council of Women says compulsory skills and military training for young people will help change youth behaviour for the good.
The Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, has announced plans to implement such training for school leavers who cannot find a place in university.
The president of the National Council of Women, Scholla Kakas, says it welcomes the plan, as it's not just about skills training, but also about discipline through military training.
"That will very much be involved in the behavioural change of our young people, it's all about behavioural change, their mind-set will be changed. And also it will help them to minimise, especially in the field of gender-based violence, that should be minimised and lowered if we have this training so that more people can have respect for one another."
Scholla Kakas says she expects the training will also help young people learn how to become self-employed.
