American Samoa business against taxes or ban to solve NCD problem

The American Samoa Chamber of Commerce chairman David Robinson has cautioned against suggestions of raising taxes or banning the import of certain products to prevent non-communicable disease.

The Department of Health two weeks ago launched its NCD Strategic Action Plan, which includes a call for bans on the importation of alcohol and cigarettes as a way to fight the disease crisis.

There were also suggestions of hiking taxes for these products.

But Mr Robinson is calling for caution saying such moves may not be in the best interests of the government or the community - particularly given the economic uncertainty faced by some businesses in the food and beverage sector.
