Solomons police lack space for offices and houses

4:45 pm on 11 November 2013

Solomon Islands acting police commissioner, Juanita Matanga, says the police headquarters at Rove in West Honiara are overcrowded.

She says the site has been engulfed by buildings belonging to private enterprises and residents.

Ms Matanga says this means there is no room for offices or accommodation for police.

She says the only option would be to go up.

The prime minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has told the commissioner that a police site, Hells Point, near Henderson Airport, could be used for additional police housing.

But on the day the prime minister made this suggestion, the government lost a court case brought by Levers Solomons Ltd, which successfully claimed the government had no right in 2011 to overrule its long term lease on the Hells Point land.
