Fiji police release arrested peaceful activists protesting Govt's budget

9:53 am on 9 November 2013

The Fiji police say they have released all but one of a group of protesters who were arrested in Suva.

Fourteen women and young people were having a meal near the Fiji Revenue Customs Authority building, wearing t-shirts calling on the Government to be more accountable with the budget it was announcing.

The Chief Operations Officer of the police, Rusiate Tudravu, says the group had gathered at a public place without a permit and were all taken in for questioning.

Yesterday evening police say all but one have been questioned and have been told they can leave.

The Executive Director of the Fiji Women's Rights Movement, Virisila Buadromo, says it was a very peaceful gathering.

"It was an informal brunch, and all they were really doing was having lunch and sitting on the seawall. The only indication that they were together was that they were all wearing t-shirts which were calling for more accountability and transparency in relation to the budget process."

Virisila Buadromo says the police action violated the 2013 Constitution, which protects the right to assembly.
