PNG police want more info to act against rogue officers

Papua New Guinea police say the public need to supply more details, including photographs if possible, when they make complaints about rogue officers.

The police spokesman, Superintendent Dominic Kakas, says they know that some complaints are not acted on.

He says the police hierarchy is serious about taking action against undisciplined, abusive and corrupt officers.

But he says they need to be properly identified, ideally with numbers, cars and photos supplied and complaint letters sent not only to the police complaints office but also separately to senior police staff.

The police commissioner Tom Kulunga says this is vital if offending officers are to be held accountable.

"We are trying to get to the public that they must report so that we can get statements and do the proper investigation and hold accountable those officers who are responsible for that kind of behaviour."
