Vanuatu tourism sector wants clarity over airport developments

A tourism industry leader in Vanuatu says it is important the government is transparent in any deal to expand the country's airport infrastructure.

The government is working with a Singaporean company which reportedly will build a new international airport on Efate and modernise others around the country.

The controversial scheme is now being vetted by a parliamentary committee after complaints about the lack of information, the high cost and the mystery surrrounding the Singaporean company.

The spokesperson for the chamber of commerce's tourism sector, Brian Death, says they are not opposed to the concept per se but more information is needed.

"In respect to what it could do to Vanuatu's financial stability if this sort of deal was done and the deal was done without proper consultation and without proper understanding of what is required to build an airport and the surrounding infrastructure that has to go with it."
