The Samoa men's team were embarrassed 32-0 by Australia, with PNG letting in 18 unanswered goals against the hosts New Zealand.
It was a tamer affair in the women's competition, with PNG holding off Samoa 2-1 in an all-Pacific affair.
The Samoa women play Australia first-up on Thursday with PNG to take on New Zealand.
And after an opening day to forget the PNG and Samoa men's teams will go head to head in the afternoon.
