New Zealand's Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs is this week holding its inaugural Tokelau Language Week.
It is the seventh and final Pacific language to be given such a focus by the New Zealand government this year.
"The minister, Hekia Parata, says the theme of Tokelau Language Week, 'Ko te au o mātua, ko fānau - At the core of a parents heart, are their children' provides a strong focus on the vital role parents play in keeping the language alive."
She says language is enriching not only because it celebrates diversity but because speaking a second language enhances educational success.
Events are planned throughout New Zealand and the minister says people should attend and discover Tokelauan music, language and culture.
