SODELPA party says unnerving to see if regime will accept declarations

The SODELPA party in Fiji says it is unnerving waiting to see if the regime will accept its financial declarations before the upcoming election.

As part of the regime's Registration of Political Parties Decree, party officials had to declare their own assets as well as that of their spouses and any children.

But the regime has for months refused to clarify how it defines a child.

The SODELPA party's general secretary, Pio Tabaiwalu, says it has interpreted the definition of a child as someone aged 18 or under.

"It can be quite unnerving when you don't really know whether they can come back to you and say well you have to declare, just before election, you are required to declare children above 18 and that becomes a very technical difficulty."

Pio Tabaiwalu says if the party does not meet the registrar's requirements, it needs to know as soon as possible so it can rectify the situation in time for the election.
