Vanuatu Environment Department joins voices against WWII ordnance

8:46 am on 14 October 2013

The Director of Vanautu's Department of the Environment, Albert William, says the rusty heap of war machinery dumped in the sea at 'One Million Dollar Point' in Santo is a risk, 68 years after the end of the Second World War.

Mr William's reaction follows confirmation by the Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy, Melanie Higgins, that the United States Government currently has no programmes to clean-up unexploded ordnance in Vanuatu.

Mr William says the challenge is that Vanuatu does not have any data to show the type of equipment dumped into the sea and the possible dangers to people and marine life.

He says the Government will have to assess the risk in order to decide what to do with the site.
