Australian senator says West Papuan Bali activists should get refuge

8:09 pm on 7 October 2013

An Australian senator is calling for the country's consulate in Bali in Indonesia to grant three West Papuan protestors sanctuary, saying he holds fears for their safety.

The trio entered the Australian consulate in Bali on Saturday night, asking for journalists to be allowed to report on the Papuan provinces without restrictions and also for the release of political prisoners.

Their protest coincides with the meeting of APEC leaders in Bali.

Greens senator, Richard Di Natale, says he understands the activists are now in hiding.

He says the Australian consulate should offer the group refuge.

"Unless there is a change of heart from the Australian consulate, then what we do face is the very real risk of these three people being detained and potentially tortured or even worse."

Richard Di Natale is the chair of a parliamentary Friends of West Papua group.
