NZ Governor-General to present Badge of the General Fono of Tokelau

6:24 am on 7 October 2013

The Ulu-o-Tokelau, Aliki Faipule Salesio Lui is expected to receive the Badge of the General Fono of Tokelau at a ceremony on Monday afternoon.

The award will be presented by the New Zealand Governor-General, Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae at Government House.

The Badge, approved by the College of Arms in London and Queen Elizabeth II, depicts the national symbol of Tokelau, the Tuluma, a uniquely Tokelauan carved wooden fisherman's tackle box and the Royal Crown.

A white cross in the centre of the Tuluma emphasises the importance of Christianity in everyday life in Tokelau.

Sir Jerry, who visited Tokelau last year, said the Badge emphasises the enduring ties between Tokelau and New Zealand and the mana of the General Fono.
