Doubts whether investigation into Fiji police violence ever took place

Amnesty International, which strongly condemned the beating of two prison escapees by Fijian security personnel after a video came to light six months ago, says it has doubts whether a promised investigation ever took place.

When a nine-minute video was posted online in March, showing the abuse and beating of two tied-up men, the police issued a statement saying they were disturbed by the content and an investigation had commenced.

But the executive director of Amnesty International New Zealand, Grant Bayldon, says Fiji authorities have refused to provide any updates on the inquiry, and Amnesty is starting to question if an investigation was ever launched.

"That's what we're starting to wonder and we've seen no evidence of an investigation and if an investigation is held by the Fiji government, that needs to be independent and it needs to be a credible investigation."

Attempts to get comment from the Fiji government on the investigation have so far been unsuccessful.
