Tonga and China have signed an economic and technical co-operation agreement through which Tonga will receive about 16 million US dollars in aid.
The Tonga government says the arrangement is the outcome of the visit to China in July by the prime minister, Lord Tu'ivakano.
It says how the money will be spent is yet to be decided.
