Sport: Tahiti's day but PNG still lead at Mini Games

4:17 am on 11 September 2013

Just one day of competition remains at the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna with Papua New Guinea still atop the medal count.

But another strong day for Tahiti in taekwondo has put them within striking distance.

Vinnie Wylie reports.

"Tahiti won seven more gold medals at the Kafika Hall to take their taekwondo tally into double figures. Theresa Tona triumphed for Papua New Guinea in the women's under 53 kilogram division to give them 29 gold, and 83 medals in all, heading into the final day. There was further success for Tahiti in beach volleyball, with their men beating Samoa in the gold medal match in two tight sets. They're now second on the medal table with 25 gold, moving above New Caledonia who remained static. As expected, Vanuatu were too strong for PNG in the women's beach volleyball final, giving the Melanesians their second gold medal of the Games. Meanwhile the final bunch of medals will be decided later today in volleyball, sailing, and rugby sevens."
