ni-Vanuatu to be encouraged to study in US universities

Officials from the United States Embassy in Port Moresby and the Papua New Guinea US Alumni Association have helped set up a Vanuatu US Alumni Association to encourage more students from Vanuatu to study in America.

The interim chairman, William Ganileo, who studied at the East West Centre in Hawaii, says the advantage of studying in the US is students are closely monitored to make sure that they gain steady progress.

Mr Ganileo says if a student wants to go to university but his marks need to improve, he is enrolled at college to prepare him to enter university.

The US Embassy in PNG feels that students from Vanuatu are not making use of the academic opportunities the American Government offers to Pacific Islanders.

Both organisations are now in Solomon Islands to set up a similar body there.
