Samoa AG joins jail corruption probe

3:05 pm on 3 September 2013

A Commission of Inquiry into allegations of corruption at Tafaigata prison in Samoa has taken a new twist, with the Attorney General's office now stepping in to assist.

The Police Commissioner, Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, and the assistant commissioner who heads Tafaigata prison, Seaga Uili Lafaele, were suspended by Cabinet last month as the probe into conditions at the prison got underway.

Our correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says this investigation has raised many questions.

He also says it's the first Commission of Inquiry where the government has not made the terms of reference public.

"The Cabinet did not say how long the investigation of the Inquiry will be, only saying that both police officers have been suspended for four months, there's no mention of who else is involved in the investigation apart from saying the Ombudsmen's office but the usual practise by the government in any Commission of Inquiry is always [to have] lawyers from the Attorney General's office as legal advisors to a Commission of Inquiry."

Autagavaia says a letter sent to the prime minister detailing allegations of corruption at the prison was behind the pair's suspension.
