The Fiji regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says he has secured Russian help for Fiji forces being deployed as UN peacekeepers in the Golan Heights.

According to Fiji media, Commodore Bainimarama made the comment in Solomon Islands where he is attending Independence Day celebrations.

The reports have given no details of the assistance offered by Russia, which he visited late last month.

He is also quoted as saying the deployment wouldn't be possible without the help of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

More than 180 soldiers were sent last month and a further 380 are scheduled to follow within days.

They have been tasked with clearing the buffer zone of Syrian rebels.
