3:04 pm on 8 July 2013

In an effort to improve its tax collection, the Northern Marianas Department of Finance will soon start door-to-door checks on small businesses.

These types of businesses are not normally checked to assess whether they are complying with regulations such as business licences or tax payments.

The emphasis is usually on medium and large scale businesses. but the Department of Finance has hired additional staff to beef up its compliance checks.

Through improved enforcement to date the government has been able to collect more in taxes.
