Papua New Guinea's central banker, Loi Bakani, says the government's spending on infrastructure in rural areas will have significant benefits for farmers.
Along with major infrastructure spending in the cities, the government, in this year's Budget, allocated significant funds to local level governments.
While bodies such as the Institute of National Affairs have questioned the capacity of such administrations, the governor of the Bank of PNG says it will be beneficial.
"Putting a lot of money in there to develop schools, hospitals or clinics, so that is a particular area where a lot of our people, are growers are. By developing them it will make it easy for those growers to reach the market with their produce and all that, so that is another good thing the government is looking at this year. But again next year I think [I'm] saying indirectly to government that look lets go in a big way into the agriculture sector."

He earlier called for the country to develop a more modern, efficient agriculture sector to ensure the economy did not become wholly dependent on the LNG projects.
