Australian PM Rudd to visit Papua New Guinea

7:23 pm on 11 July 2013

The Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, is scheduled to visit Papua New Guinea next week.

Mr Rudd will hold talks with his PNG counterpart, Peter O'Neill and other key ministers regarding the Australian aid programme, trade and investment.

This will be the third time Mr Rudd has visited PNG, but the first in his latest stint as prime minister after he overthrew Julia Gillard earlier this month.

Mr Rudd says he plans to get a progress report on the huge liquefied natural gas project in which Australia has significant equity.

He also says he wants to help PNG combat high rates of street crime.

Mr Rudd says if Canberra can co-operate better with PNG to lift the levels of security on the streets of the bigger cities, it would be a positive for the Australian business community as well as the good people of PNG.
