Australia's Rudd begins PNG visit

8:17 am on 15 July 2013

Australia's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has arrived in Papua New Guinea for talks on trade, how to tackle crime in PNG and the controversial Australian-run detention centre on Manus Island.

On arrival, Mr Rudd was met by the deputy prime minister, Leo Dion, and the foreign minister, Rimbink Pato.

High on the agenda of talks with his PNG counterpart, Peter O'Neill, is PNG's endemic law and order problems, amid consideration of more police co-operation.

The PNG Supreme Court has dismissed a constitutional challenge against Manus centre, but the UNHCR has heavily criticised the conditions at the site.

Australia's Immigration Minister, Tony Burke, is part of the delegation and is expected to discuss progress of construction of a permanent facility on Manus.
