Nauru tight-lipped about riot aftermath

1:37 pm on 22 July 2013

Officials on Nauru are tight-lipped about the aftermath of a riot at the Australian-run asylum seeker detention centre.

Reports from Australia say more than 120 asylum seekers were jailed on Friday night after a violent protest in which accomodation blocks, the health centre and kitchen were destroyed by fire.

The Director of Nauru Media, Sharain Hiram, says authorities on Nauru are meeting to discuss the riot.

"We can't talk to anyone right now because we are still in that meeting, that discussion on the situation. We're trying to get the latest update from government sides, from police sides. We're trying to get in touch with them and do an interview with them."
