A call to remove a government board in American Samoa that decides which companies receive tax exemptions is gaining momentum.
Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin says Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga is considering his request to abolish the government's Tax Exemption Board because it does not provide a level playing field for businesses.
The board recommends to the governor businesses who get a tax holiday as a way of encouraging investment.
Faleomavaega told KHJ News he has raised his concerns with the governor because he feels the board simply invites inconsistencies and favoritism.
"And it makes it difficult for investors from off island to to come and tell us exactly what, you know, depending on political ties or friendships which is really not the way to run a government. I think what we should establish any form of incentives for investors by law, so that everybody is on the same level playing field."
