8:41 pm on 30 July 2013

Staff at SLN's nickel plant in New Caledonia's capital Noumea have been evacuated after a fire at the facility.

On Tuesday afternoon, firefighters were mobilised to extinguish the fire which is understood to have originated at a casting slag.

Huge plumes of smoke, additional to the usual operational discharge from the plant, rose over the Doniambo site.

Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes reports that all Noumea's available firefighters were deployed to fight the blaze.

According to SLN, the fire was brought under control by early evening.
