Two strong quakes registered off Vanuatu

Two strong earthquakes were felt off Vanuatu early this morning.

The first, a 5.9 tremor, struck just after 3am local time, 94 kilometres from Lakatoro at a depth of only 3 kilometres.

Inquirer News.Com reports the second quake, a 5.7-magnitude was felt just 4am local time.

The US Geological Survey says the second quake was 31 kilometres deep, and was some 84 kilometers south of Lakatoro.

The US Geological Survey says no tsunami warnings were issued for either quake.

There have been no reports of damage.

Lakatoro is on the island of Malekula, 136 kilometers from the capital Port Vila.
