A senior Papua New Guinea police officer from Mt Hagen says an assault that left her with serious facial wounds last week is the latest in a series of beatings by her husband, who is also a senior police officer.
The Post Courier newspaper reports Sergeant Susan Mondiai, the commander of Momase Community Policing, saying last week's assault is the third time her husband has hit her in the face.
Mrs Mondiai, whose brother is the Momase Divisional Police Commander, Nema Mondiai, says an assault by her husband in 2006 caused a deep cut to her forehead and on two other occasions he has broken her hand.
She says she has been vocal on domestic violence in both the media and public gatherings and now she has to stop forgiving her husband and stand by her teachings.
The Western Highlands Provincial Police Commander Martin Lakari yesterday arrested and charged Inspector Jacob Kamiak with assault.
Superintendent Lakari says there is a zero tolerance in place for police officers to assault their wives or anyone else and the matter is a disgrace to the police department.
