Student brawl in PNG's Port Moresby blocks key road

1:33 pm on 12 August 2013

A drunken brawl at the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby at the weekend ended in an ethnic clash between two provincial groups.

The acting metropolitan police commander, Godwin Dukaduka, has told the Post Courier that the two groups from Simbu and Enga had staged an all out tribal fight at the campus which spilled on to the main Waigani Drive road.

He says for a full hour the road was blocked as the two groups chased each other with knives and other sharp objects and stones.

Commander Dukaduka says once police arrived they managed to drive the students back to the campus and clear the road.

He says after talks at the campus the leaders of both groups agreed to meet and try and resolve their issues.

The commander says the situation at the university remains tense and his staff are patrolling the area.
