A senior police officer in Papua New Guinea who assaulted his wife, a fellow officer, has been given a suspended six-month jail term and fined 3,000 kina.
The newspaper, The National, reports that Mt Hagen senior magistrate Jeremiah Singomat put Chief Inspector Moses
Kamyak on a two-year good behaviour bond on the condition that he did not drink alcohol or threaten his wife.
Mr Singomatt said violence against women was one of the major issues in the country and the law would come down hard on offenders.
The officer's wife described the court's decision as a breakthrough for policewomen and encouraged others to report any violence by their spouses.
