American Samoa settles back pay claims

6:16 pm on 15 August 2013

The US Department of Labor says the American Samoa Government has paid close to one million dollars in back wages to government employees, resolving the findings of an investigation conducted by its Wage and Hour Division in 2011.

The government has paid back wages to 256 employees, most of them police officers with the Department of Public Safety.

Funds to pay the back wages were included in the five million US dollar 2013 supplemental budget appropriation approved by the Fono and signed into law by the governor in April.

Failure to reach an agreement would resulted in the government being sued in federal court.
