French Polynesia government confirms Sofitel Maeva purchase

The French Polynesian government says it has finalised the purchase of the Sofitel Maeva Hotel in Tahiti.

The hotel closed last year and has been the subject of speculation over its possible future use.

Touted as a possible casino site last year, it has of late been suggested that it could be acquired by Punaauia municipality, whose mayor belongs to a rival party.

The government says its purchase has now been completed.

It is expected to be demolished as that coastal area is to make way for a major tourism venture.
