Drugs defendants in Cooks' surprise guilty plea

3:21 pm on 20 August 2013

Three more defendants in the Cook Islands' largest drug case have pleaded guilty in the High Court on Rarotonga this morning.

The trio are the former New Zealand police detective inspector Mark Franklin, along with Riki Carlson and Mere King.

All three faced charges of selling cannabis and possessing cannabis for sale.

A fourth defendant Dina Matapo has pleaded not guilty and will go on trial tomorrow.

Justice Colin Doherty, who sent three co-defendants to prison last year, will preside over her trial.

The case involved a group of 13 caught in a sting in 2011.

One of those sentenced last year was a senior police officer and the daughter of a former police commissioner and another her partner, the son of the deputy prime minister.

Another worked for the postal service.
