French Polynesia's assembly has adopted a resolution to be presented to next week's Pacific Islands Forum meeting in the Marshall Islands.
In the resolution, the government wants Pacific leaders to refrain from supporting any outside action that goes against the will of French Polynesia's population.
The move follows last May's UN decision to reinscribe French Polynesia on the decolonisation list, which also includes New Caledonia.
The UN move was sponsored by four Pacific countries, led by Solomon Islands.
An anti-independence politician, Teva Rohfritsch, has told the assembly today that it's questionable what lessons French Polynesia could learn from small Pacific countries, whose populations are condemned to misery.
A majority of Tahiti's political parties favour the current autonomy statute.
There has been no independence vote and although the current assembly in Tahiti has asked Paris to organise one as soon as possible, France has ignored its request.
