Sport: Fiji and Samoa on collision course at Youth Netball Championships

11:01 am on 29 August 2013

Fiji and Samoa are on-course to meet at the World Youth Netball Championships after guaranteeing a top 12 finish in Glasgow.

The Baby Pearls, who finished third in group A, beat Melanesian rivals Papua New Guinea 60-48 and will now face Namibia for a spot in the playoff for ninth place.

Samoa ran out 60-40 winners against Bermuda for their third win in five matches, setting up a rematch against host nation Scotland, who they beat in pool play.

If both teams win they will meet in the playoff for ninth and tenth place.

The Baby Pepes assistant coach, Oti Sarufa, says despite finishing on the wrong end of the scoreboard against Fiji there were plenty of positives to take out of the match.

"We had the upper hand where we had a lot of the opportunities and our midcourt was brilliant getting the balls into the shooting area. It was working according to our plans and only when the turnaround in defence"

we kind of slowed down a bit and that is when Fiji came into what had happened after.

Papua New Guinea will take on Singapore on Friday for a spot in the 13th place playoff match and can finish no lower than 16th overall, which is where they came at the last Youth Championships four years ago.
