Mayor in CNMI backs move to abolish Saipan Council

11:21 am on 31 May 2013

The Mayor of Saipan, Donald Flores, says the municipal council on the Northern Marianas' main island should be abolished to help conserve resources and streamline government.

Speaking to the Saipan Tribune, Mr Flores says continuing to appropriate budgets to an agency that administers almost nothing is not sound policymaking.

He says the resources would be better used supporting the mayor's office.

Mr Flores has made a submission to the legislature supporting a call for abolition of municipal councils on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

The newspaper reports that past attempts to abolish the municipal councils in the legislature have all failed.
