New Caledonia general strike enters third day

1:46 pm on 17 May 2013

A general strike by most New Caledonian unions has entered a third day, with the action again aimed at high supermarket prices.

The unions, which have been calling for a lower cost of living, targetted the main supermarkets in the Noumea area in protest at allegedly excessive margins.

The disruption to public life has been limited, but yesterday's Australia-bound flights were cancelled.

Two days ago, thhousands of people staged a march to the seat of government amid accusations by the union that politicians have failed to reform the economy and implement agreed measures aimed at cutting prices.

The president, Harold Martin, has called a meeting with the major wholesalers and importers to ask them to consider dropping their prices.
