The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has opened a criminal investigation into alleged poaching of dolphins in Guam's coastal waters.

The Marianas Variety reports that the administration's move was prompted by reports from eyewitness accounts of poaching off Guam's southwestern coast.

In Guam, it is illegal under the Marine Mammal Protection Act to harass or take, hunt, capture, collect or kill dolphins, or attempt to do so.
