PNG's most notorious criminal pulls off another jailbreak

Papua New Guinea's most notorious bank robber, William Kapris, has escaped from the country's main prison along with at least three others.

Police say Kapris was armed and had inside assistance when he broke out from Port Moresby's Bomana prison yesterday afternoon.

It's understood the guards on duty at the time of his breakout were not armed.

Kapris, who has been serving a 30-year sentence for a series of bank robberies and is waiting sentencing for a murder case, has previously made at least two successful escapes from custody.

The news comes as PNG's legislators prepare to debate tougher penalties for violent crime in the nation's parliament, including reactivating the country's dormant death penalty.
